project poster
How do East and Southeast Asian queer men perceive themselves on Grindr? This explorative study examins the lives of seven East and Southeast Asian men and their experiences and identites on Grindr.

Summary

The study used walkthrough narrative interviews to explore the experiences and identites of East and Southeast Asian men on Grindr.

Findings demonstrated a variety of experiences; at first it aligns with prior literature that assumes negative experiences. However, it also revealed the complexities of erotic capital and how one may ensue positive experiences. Most importantly it reveals the neoliberal subjectivites of sexuality and the individualised nature of ones' identity.

Overall, this study unveils counter-narratives to the socially patterned experience of gay East and Southeast Asian men and outlines the complex interplay of structure and agency in forming their identities.
